With Diwali around the corner, vacation too is around. It is not only a time for celebration, but also for family get-togetherness and activities!  little kids can feel a little left out of all the bustle, while Mom and Dad are busy with the festivities. So one way to include them and keep them occupied is to engage them with activities and crafts.

Book review: 150 brilliant ways to keep young minds fit and fine by Neera Maini Srivastav

Teenage years are something of a stress, both in terms of the biological changes that teenagers go through & in term of their life events. Being a parent, it’s our duty to make them understand right and wrong. It’s a challenging period for both parents and teens. Neera Maini Srivasatav, a writer by profession, has written a beautiful book for teens, helping each parent to guide their children with a positive approach. The book is split into 3 sections: Mind, Body and Spirit. It offers an integrated, holistic approach to every aspect of young teens. The language used is also simple, written in small paragraphs describing different aspects related to teenagers.

What I like: I loved the affirmations given in the end of each sub topic. These affirmations can be used by each and every one in their daily routines. I highly recommend parents to gift this book to your teens making them aware of their surroundings.

About the Author: Neera Maini Srivastav, a writer and advertising professional. She already has written 3 successful books.

Natkhat Krishna.

Few days ago, I was shopping things like erasers, pencils, chocolates, sketch pens etc. My son was very curious to know why I was shopping all these stuff.

Suvvir: “Mamma, why are you shopping all these stuffs of koi bag, it’s not my birthday?”

Mamma: “It’s Lord Krishna Birthday, remember every year in our society we celebrate Janmashtmi, where mamma puts all these goodies in a pot. We come together and pray to Lord Krishna to appear in our heart and remove all the bad qualities and make us happy and joyful.”

Suvvir: “yup, Mamma tell me something more about Lord Krishna, it’s so interesting”

I felt first time my son was asking me far more sensible questions than his technologies and mechanic set toys. Being an adult, it’s important that we should not sweep such topics under the carpet. It’s important that children understand the significance and celebrate every festival in the right mood and spirit. I explained him the whole story like:
Lord Krishna was born in the month of Shravan, at midnight, in the jail. When he was born, he appeared as four handed Vishnu and then upon Mother Devaki’s request he assumed the form of a cute little baby with two hands. The uniqueness of Krishna’s birth is that not only did he choose his time and place of birth, but also choose his parents. His birth is not ordinary, rather extra ordinary and very special. Little Krishna was a small, naughty, charming child. Lord Krishna was also known as “Makhanchor” as he used to eat makhan by stealing from others as well from his own house. To get makhan he used to break earthen pots and form pyramid to get butter/curd/milk to reach those pots along with his friends. This is the reason we also get to see dahi handi competition during Janamashtami.
After seeing his curiosity I wanted to show Suvvir a play where he can visually see the life of Lord Krishna and understand much better. That was when I came across a Children’s Play named “Natkhat Krishna” by Kids Connect Entertainment. A play in English that will appeal to kids of all ages with its high energy action and soft playful moments. I decided to take Suvvir for this play and trust me this was the best decision I took for my son.

A play which enacted the life of Krishna, right from childhood. The sets were designed so beautifully that it brought alive Krishna's Vrindavan. The lights, colour and sound all added to the beauty without interrupting the drama. There were no religious verses or chants but instead the makers had used everyday language to share messages of friendship, good vs. evil, and good values.
When I compared Krishna’s story in our daily lives, I realised each small kid is Krishna. Each Mother is blessed to have a Krishna. We being a mother like yashoda maiya loves our child unconditionally, avoiding all their mistakes. They really love to grab our attention by doing all silly things and get pampered just like Krishna. They don’t know the meaning of mine and yours and hence feel that there is no difference in eating or taking things from others, just like Krishna, who said “Makhan is makhan. How it can be yours or mine.” I’m indeed blessed to have Krishna in my life who is naughty, cute and a loving baby. My family and I enjoyed watching Natkhat Krishna and recommend it to every family as a must watch to kick start the festive season. Kidz Connect leaves you with good memories of Krishna and I guarantee you and your kids will not just be humming the music for weeks but also discuss various points of the play.

If you haven’t booked your tickets to watch Natkhat Krishna, book now at bookmyshow!! A play in English that will appeal to kids of all ages with its high energy action and soft playful moments. So come, be a part of the wondrous adventures of Natkhat Krishna as he and his friends light up Vrindavan. Laugh, dance, sing and enjoy to the glory of his flute, mischief, affection, wisdom and bravery!!!

8 points to be remembered while toilet training your child..

Toilet training should never be enforced; it is a gradual process, and develops as the child matures. Being a new mom, we always want our child to learn everything quickly, be it potty training or anything else. I can never forget my early days of motherhood as soon as I used to change his nappies, he used to poo again. Ha-ha, I used to feed him again feeling he is hungry. I used to spend whole day only feeding and cleaning my son. Later I bought a nice potty seat from Mother care keeping in mind all his comforts, used to keep his favourite books so that he enjoys going to bathroom. I truly remember how my Mother in law used to narrate a story from Baby T.V, teaching him all the shapes. When I see six years back, those were the best days in my life. We really need to be patient in every phase of life. Once you have excelled on potty training, there are some key things a mom needs to remember:-

·       Praise: - Congratulate your toddler whenever he or she manages to poo in the potty.

·       Reminders: - Your toddler can’t wait for long, so keep asking if he or she needs to go for potty.

·       Make it easy: - Keep the potty seat where your child can find it. If your home has bathrooms on different floors, you need to place potty seats in each one. Dress your child in clothes that are quick to pull off- such as trousers instead of dungarees.

·       Give privacy: - If your toddler wants to take his potty seat in a corner, that’s fine. We need to give them privacy.

·       Hygiene: - Training your child to wash their hands before and after going to the washroom.

·       Take it slowly: - Wait until your child is dry during the day before you try to tackle the nights. Please Take a break if the child becomes anxious, and go back to nappies for a few weeks.

·       Be Consistent: - Once you’ve started potty training, keep going until your child is used to that routine. Don’t let the child use nappies one day and the potty next, or go back to nappies because you are going to stay with friends or going out for a day.

·       Be patient: - The entire process is to be taught with a lot of patience, love and affection, but at a proper age. Clean up the inevitable accidents without much comments – “Never mind, next time you can do it in the potty” is enough.

So train your child with love and  always remember "No forcing, No fussing", be natural for a very natural happening.

5 ways to develop a Good Behaviour in Your Child.

“The sign of great parenting is not the child’s behaviour… The sign of truly great parenting is the parent’s behaviour.” Each child is different and every parent has his or her way of dealing it. Being a parent we have to guide our child in every bit of activity they do, to make them understand and learn the difference between right and wrong. It’s our responsibility to inculcate a good behaviour in our child. Here are few tips :-

·       Be a good Example: - Children’s love to imitate, and they naturally think whatever their parents do is right. So, we must set a good example.

·       Encourage a level of Responsibility: - We must give our children opportunities to help us.

·       Acknowledge a good behaviour: - Show that you are pleased when your child is doing things that you approve of, such as giving another child some of his or her apple slices, or playing nicely with toys.

·       Discipline: - When your child does something you dislike, say so. Keep it simple: “You kicked Tiara. Kicking is wrong because it hurts people.” We should always talk about the behaviour as being wrong, rather than the child being “naughty” or “bad”. Don’t unintentionally reward bad behaviour by giving your child extra attention because of it.

·       Differentiate between right & wrong : - Give your child the opportunity to learn what is unacceptable. We should make them understand that colouring on drawing book is acceptable but colouring on wall is unacceptable.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” So be a good teacher and a best parent because we are responsible for their development and learning.

Safety Precautions during Holi

Holi is a festival of colours. It is one of a beautiful way to celebrate the arrival of spring. The first day we begin with bonfire which depicts the victory of good over evil. On second day, children’s and youth spray coloured powdered solutions, dance, laugh & celebrate to the core. It is also a festival where people unite keeping their grudges away, as it is said “Bura na mano, Holi hai...” Kids love buying different types of pichkaris and water colours. Below are few safety precaution we need to be careful about:-

·       Use Eco-friendly Colours: - We should use Herbal, natural & skin friendly colours, as these colours are easy to wash off & cause no damage to the skin.

·       Save Environment: - We should Respect our Natural Resources & avoid wasting too much of water.

·       Oiling: - It is essential that we apply coconut oil on our hair & water proof moisturizer on our face, before stepping out of home.

·       Spare Animals: - We should play Holi with humans not with animals. We should guide our children not to throw colours on dogs and cats.

·       Wear full sleeves: - Try wearing full sleeves shirts or t-shirts & leggings that cover your legs fully, so that your sensitive body parts are not exposed to the harmful colours.

·       Wear Sunglasses: - We should protect our eyes by wearing sunglasses. If colours enters the eyes, immediately rinse them with cold water.

·       Avoid harsh soaps: - We should try using baby shampoos and soap to get rid of the colours, avoid using harsh soaps and shampoos which will only spoil your skin.

Wishing all my readers the best Holi festival
Filled with happiness and sweet moments
       To cherish now and forever.
            Happy Holi”
