Toilet training should never
be enforced; it is a gradual process, and develops as the child matures. Being
a new mom, we always want our child to learn everything quickly, be it potty
training or anything else. I can never forget my early days of motherhood as
soon as I used to change his nappies, he used to poo again. Ha-ha, I used to
feed him again feeling he is hungry. I used to spend whole day only feeding and
cleaning my son. Later I bought a nice potty seat from Mother care keeping in
mind all his comforts, used to keep his favourite books so that he enjoys going to bathroom. I truly remember how my Mother in law used to narrate a story
from Baby T.V, teaching him all the shapes. When I see six years back, those were the best days in my life. We really need to be patient in every phase of life.
Once you have excelled on potty training, there are some key things a mom needs
to remember:-
· Praise: - Congratulate your toddler whenever he or she
manages to poo in the potty.
· Reminders: - Your toddler can’t wait for long, so keep
asking if he or she needs to go for potty.
· Make it easy: - Keep the potty seat where your child
can find it. If your home has bathrooms on different floors, you need to place
potty seats in each one. Dress your child in clothes that are quick to pull
off- such as trousers instead of dungarees.
· Give privacy: - If your toddler wants to take his
potty seat in a corner, that’s fine. We need to give them privacy.
· Hygiene: - Training your child to wash their hands
before and after going to the washroom.
· Take it slowly: - Wait until your child is dry during
the day before you try to tackle the nights. Please Take a break if the child becomes
anxious, and go back to nappies for a few weeks.
· Be Consistent: - Once you’ve started potty training,
keep going until your child is used to that routine. Don’t let the child use
nappies one day and the potty next, or go back to nappies because you are going
to stay with friends or going out for a day.
· Be patient: - The entire process is to be taught with
a lot of patience, love and affection, but at a proper age. Clean up the
inevitable accidents without much comments – “Never mind, next time you can do
it in the potty” is enough.
So train your child with love and always remember "No forcing, No fussing", be natural for a very natural happening.
